Weaning

If any of you follow me on Instagram you would of seen I began slowly weaning Tayo around a month ago, when he was 5 months old. The NHS recommend weaning at around 6 months, but I kind of just followed his signals and milk just wasn't seeming to 100% satisfy him anymore. I'm definitely not pretending to be any kind of weaning expert, in fact I'm quite the opposite, however what I can do is tell you is what I've done and what I would do differently. So...

I started of by introducing fruit puree and baby porridge in the mornings , around 9am. I made my own purees with the Beaba Babycook machine, which made it sooooo easy. It steams the food perfectly, then blends all in the same machine, so less washing up, YAY!! Check out my WEANING highlights on my instagram @billiebrown to see a video of me using the Babycook :)

I started off with apple, pear and baby porridge. This was probably my first mistake, as now, Tayo has the sweetest tooth lol. In hindsight, I wish I had introduced lunch first...things like sweet potato, broccoli, peas, pumpkin, avocado, carrots etc would of allowed a more varied diet earlier on. Rather than now, at 6 months trying to introduce these more savoury flavours is slightly harder as he just LOVES his apple porridge lol. BUT we are getting there.

Now, another issue I've come across from giving Tayo apple puree and porridge nearly every day for breakfast is that his bowel movements started to become a little irregular. This is very common when starting a baby on solids, however when they are backed up for a few days its wise to take action. After doing some research I learnt that apple and porridge amongst other foods can slow everything down, whereas fruits beginning with P or anything high in fibre, plus good old water can get things moving. Ella's Kitchen prune pouch has been a life saver!! After a few days of pear and prune breakfasts, tummy massages and bicycle legs everything was back flowing. You can literally youtube the tummy massage to help, it works wonders !!

So now he has a fruit with yogurt or porridge for breakfast, and I've introduced dinner at 5. I tried him with lunch at 2PM for a few days, but he was not ready at all, so he just has a boob feed and a tiny bit of finger food. By that I mean one of those melty puffs, or some soft fruit or veg in his munchkin feeder which I've found so helpful. I'm a little scared to just go full on baby led weaning, and give him a chunk of food so these alternatives are great to minimise chocking but get them used to textures, chewing and feeding themselves. TOP TIP- frozen banana in the munchkin feeder is AMAZING for teething!

For his dinners, I started of with some veg mixes, like sweet pot & peas, or avocado & broccoli. After a little while, my mum came round and batch cooked some meat dishes for him. Shepards pie, chicken stew, cauliflower cheese and veg stew. I use The Small Human Company freezer tray to store fruit purees, and NUK by Annabel Karmel to store meat dishes, both of these I found on Amazon Prime and I highly recommended. The Small Human Company freezer tray also came with two reusable food pouches which are brilliant for when your out and about.

I tried a few weaning spoons, but Vital Baby are by far my favourite. They're perfect size, reasonable and easy to wash. I also use Vital Baby Food Pots as little bowls, to defrost and heat food. They're also great to take little snacks out as the lid is super secure. While on this brand, I HAVE to mention their Aquatint Sanitising Water....what a genius invention. This kills 99.9% of bacteria and contains no alcohol or harmful chemicals, you can literally spray anything and its sanitises it. Dummies, surfaces, tethers, hands etc etc, you don't even need to rinse after use. Its a literal MUST HAVE if you have a baby. I have minimum two bottles on the go at all times. I use this to clean his highchair tray so theres no nasty chemicals left on it after a clean. I also have a mini size bottle in my changing bag for when I'm out and about, I'm not sure how I'd live without it lol. As he gets older and starts snacking while we are out, it will be great to quickly spray down his hands before eating.

I will continue to update you on his weaning journey and share my do's and don'ts...if you head over to my Instagram I also do daily weaning stories and they're all saved in my highlights !
